Our Setup & Approach
We use proven setups like crawler harnesses—nightcrawlers on spinner rigs with blades—adjusting weights and colors based on depth and conditions. When crankbaits are more effective, we turn to favorites like Reef Runners, Bandits, and Flicker Shads. We also use spoons for suspended fish when the bite calls for it.
Trolling is our go-to method. We use planer boards to spread lines wide, control depth with snap weights or jet divers, and maintain a steady speed between 1.5 and 2.5 mph. When fish are deeper, we’ll run harnesses along the bottom or drop Dipsy divers into the thermocline. If needed, we’ll switch things up with jigging techniques using blade baits or spoons.
Where We Fish
Launching from Marblehead gives us quick access to some of the best fishing spots on Lake Erie. In the spring, we focus on reef areas near Kelleys Island and the Bass Islands where pre-spawn walleye gather. During the summer, we head out to deeper flats near West Sister Island or the “Firing Range.” The “Humps” off Port Clinton are also reliable, and if conditions allow, we’ll head east to the Central Basin to target deeper water and larger fish.
